Jones’ case gained renewed attention in 2018, when the ABC documentary series “ The Last Defense” spotlighted his case. But Jones insists he’s innocent, and he, his attorneys and advocates have a raised a number of issues with his case.Īccording to his clemency petition, Jones and his attorneys say he’s spent nearly two decades on death row for a crime he did not commit due to “fundamental breakdowns in the system tasked with deciding” his guilt, including ineffective and inexperienced defense attorneys, racial bias among his jury and alleged prosecutorial misconduct. Jones, who is Black, was sentenced to death after being convicted of Howell’s murder during a carjacking. Jones says he’s innocent and millions support his claims So who is Julius Jones, and why have so many people following his case? The ruling was a boon to Jones’ many supporters, but the Republican governor on Thursday said he was commuting the sentence with the condition Jones will not be eligible for a commutation, pardon or parole for the rest of his life. The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board has twice recommended Jones’ sentence be commuted to life in prison with the possibility of parole, most recently in a 3-1 vote on November 1. Kevin Stitt announced he’d decided to commute Jones’ sentence to life in death without the possibility of parole, saying in a statement on Twitter he came to the decision after “prayerful consideration.” Jones had been scheduled to be executed Thursday afternoon for the murder of Paul Howell in 1999. The death sentence of Julius Jones was commuted by Oklahoma’s governor Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole, stopping his impending execution. ![]() Let’s see how this applies to a simple acid-base reaction between hydrochloric acid and fluoride ion: Recall that the driving force for a reaction is usually based on two factors: relative charge stability, and relative total bond energy. The pK a of the thiol group on the cysteine side chain, for example, is approximately 8.3, while the pKa for the alcohol group on the serine side chain is on the order of 17. More importantly to the study of biological organic chemistry, this trend tells us that thiols are more acidic than alcohols. But in the book of Job, of the 15th century B.C.E., we read that the Creator is “suspending the earth upon nothing.”- Job 26:7. By the 18th century C.E., scientists were accepting the idea that stars and planets might hang in a void. One of the scientists who helped to advance this concept, Lord Kelvin, noted that the Bible says about heaven and earth: “Just like a garment they will all wear out.” ( Psalm 102:25, 26) Kelvin believed, as the Bible teaches, that God could choose to prevent such decay from destroying His creations.- Ecclesiastes 1:4.Īristotle taught that all the heavenly bodies were encased in crystalline spheres, each one nested tightly within the next, with the earth innermost. It suggests that all matter, whether heavenly or earthly, tends to decay. But in the 19th century, scientists formulated the concept of entropy. Greek scientist Aristotle, of the fourth century B.C.E., taught that decay happens only on the earth, while the starry heavens could never change or decay.
