![]() If you are trying to build a super cheap battery with good LiFePO4 cells, and you follow the instructions on this page and add the most basic safety features, you wont need a BMS. High quality BMS are so expensive that you are better off buying a drop-in lead acid replacement lifepo4, like the battle born, that has an actual warranty and will last for ages (click here to learn more). Many EV/marine forum people agree that a BMS is more of a liability than a benefit, unless you spend the big bucks. Also understand that many BMS available online are cheaply made and will fail before the battery does. You can build safety protection features as you please. You can use a dedicated BMS for your LiFePO4 battery to manage various safety features, but you don't need one. Great insurance to have one! Takes seconds to install and you just leave it on your pack and forget it. They are super cheap (under $20), and if your packs ever do go out of balance, an active balancer will balance the cells extremely fast. Most lifepo4 packs used for solar will not go out of balance, but it is wise to check the balance every couple of months. Lately I have grown to love "active cell balancers" with my lifepo4 packs. If you are charging and discharging from 100% to 0% at high c ratings, your cells will go out of balance over time and you will need to balance them. Intermittent Cell Balancing: This may or may not apply to you.More on this at the bottom of the page (or watch this video). If you have a small battery, mismatched/used cells, chargers that only charge to 14.5 volts (and cannot be edited), you should top balance. This will ensure that none of the cells will dip to too low of a voltage when the battery is discharged.īottom balancing is recommended for solar because you want your SOC to float around 50%. If they are bottom balanced properly, they should be nearly the same voltage when nearly depleted. ![]() Discharge again and watch the balance of the cells. When the battery is nearly depleted, balance the cells. Slowly discharge the cells to 5-10% capacity while watching the balance of the cells.
